Senior Design Manager

We're currently recruiting for a Senior Design Manager based in Melbourne for our client. The company is a growing EPC contractor delivering utility-scale renewable energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), high-voltage substations and electrical balance of plant (eBoP) infrastructure projects across Australia.

As part of a significant growth phase, they are seeking a Senior Design Manager to provide technical leadership across major energy infrastructure projects. This role will provide leadership across multiple concurrent projects, ensuring high-quality design outcomes, effective stakeholder engagement and strong collaboration between engineering, project delivery and construction teams for complex BESS, solar and substation projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design management function across multiple infrastructure projects from concept through to detailed design and construction.
• Develop and implement design strategies that align with project objectives and business goals.
• Establish and maintain design standards, governance processes and quality assurance procedures.
• Review and approve key technical decisions, ensuring compliance with project requirements and industry standards.
• Manage design programmes, deliverables, resources and design budgets to achieve project milestones.
• Lead and mentor multidisciplinary design teams, fostering collaboration, continuous improvement and technical excellence.
• Coordinate closely with engineering, procurement, construction and project management teams to deliver integrated project outcomes.
• Identify and manage design-related risks, implementing mitigation strategies where required.
• Oversee design coordination, value engineering initiatives and constructability reviews.
• Monitor project progress, prepare management reports and ensure timely delivery of all design documentation.

Required Experience

• Extensive experience leading the design management of large-scale electricity infrastructure, renewable energy or power generation projects.
• Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams across multiple concurrent projects.
• Strong understanding of the complete project lifecycle including feasibility, concept design, detailed design, procurement and construction.
• Experience managing design programmes, budgets, resources and technical deliverables.
• Proven ability to coordinate engineering, construction and commercial stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes.
• Strong knowledge of design governance, quality assurance and risk management principles.
• Experience delivering complex HV electrical infrastructure, substations, transmission, distribution and/or renewable energy projects will be highly regarded.
• Excellent leadership, stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Ability to balance technical, commercial and programme requirements while delivering high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
