Overview
We are currently recruiting for a Protection Engineer to be based in Melbourne for our client who operate in the Transmission & Distribution sector. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to national projects with a strong focus on protection systems for substations. As a Protection Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability and safety of Australia’s high-voltage transmission network, supporting the energy transition and delivering excellence in power infrastructure.
Responsibilities
  • Design, review, and implement protection systems for high-voltage substations.
  • Perform relay coordination studies and develop protection settings for various equipment.
  • Support commissioning activities, including testing and troubleshooting of protection schemes.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, including protection schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met on time and to the highest standards.
  • Conduct fault analysis and provide technical solutions to improve system performance.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian Standards and relevant regulatory requirements in protection system design and implementation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance protection engineering processes
Required Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in protection engineering within the power transmission sector.
  • Demonstrated expertise in substation protection systems, including design, testing, and commissioning.
  • Proficiency in using protection relay software (e.g., SEL, GE, or Siemens tools).
  • Strong knowledge of Australian Standards, IEC standards, and industry best practices in protection systems.
  • Experience working on high-voltage (HV) substations.
  • Proven ability to conduct fault analysis and relay coordination studies.
  • Track record of working on complex, large-scale transmission projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder management.
Qualifications
  • Tertiary Qualifications in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or equivalent.
  • Chartered / Professional Engineer (desirable)
