Principal Primary Design Engineer

We’re currently recruiting for a Principal Primary Design Engineer based in Melbourne for our client. The company is a growing EPC contractor delivering utility-scale renewable energy, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), high-voltage substations and electrical balance of plant (eBoP) infrastructure projects across Australia.

As part of a significant growth phase, they are seeking a Principal Primary Design Engineer to provide technical leadership across major energy infrastructure projects. This role will play a key part in developing internal engineering capability, driving design excellence and supporting the delivery of complex BESS, solar and substation projects from concept through to construction.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across all stages of project delivery, from concept design through to construction support.
• Lead the design, review and approval of primary electrical deliverables for BESS facilities, solar farms, substations and associated electrical balance of plant infrastructure.
• Develop and review single line diagrams (SLDs), equipment layouts, earthing designs, cable routing and general arrangement drawings.
• Perform and review primary design studies including earthing, fault level and equipment selection assessments.
• Drive design optimisation, constructability reviews and value engineering initiatives.
• Coordinate with civil, structural, secondary and project delivery teams to ensure integrated design solutions.
• Review engineering calculations, specifications, reports and design documentation.
• Provide technical oversight and mentorship to engineers and designers within the primary engineering discipline.
• Support project delivery and construction teams by resolving technical queries and site-related issues.
• Contribute to the development of engineering standards, quality systems and best-practice methodologies.

Required Experience

• Extensive experience delivering primary electrical design for utility-scale energy infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated experience working on BESS, solar, substation and electrical balance of plant (eBoP) projects.
• Strong understanding of HV substation design.
• Experience developing and reviewing SLDs, equipment layouts, earthing designs and associated primary engineering documentation.
• Experience working within EPC, Design & Construct or Engineering Consultancy project environments.
• Proven experience providing technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Strong understanding of Australian Standards, utility requirements and relevant engineering codes.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Chartered Engineer – CPEng (preferred but not essential).

RPEQ, RPEV, NER or equivalent registration (preferred but not essential).
